Light switch 3 wires to 2 wires. The old switch was attached with two blacks inserted into the back of the switch. All the white wires are capped together and the same is for the ground wires. Com on the first switch connects to com on the second switch l1 on the first switch connects to l1 on the second and l2 on the first switch connects to l2 on the second.
If you re changing out a light fixture and find two wires on the fixture and three wires in the box you re not out of luck. The 3 wire system is less common than the 2 wire system it includes a neutral at the switch as well as the live and switched live wires. My husband just decided to reattach the light back to the wall without trying to disconnect any of the wiring. One 2 core earth cable takes live and neutral to the switch back box a second cable takes the neutral and switched live to the light. 1 if the old slater switch only controlled a light from one wall location then it is a single pole.
2 if replacing the slater with a standard single pole switch you will need a digital voltmeter that also has a built in continuity tester. The slater switch is actually a combination switch and splicing point. If the slater controlled the lights from 2 wall locations then it is a 3 way.
Hi all i am replacing my single pole light switch and noticed when i removed the old switch that there are three black wires coming from the box. Of the three black wires only one of them is hot. Our lights that we bought has 3 wires with it and the ones currently attached to the walls has only 2 wires.
We are now debaiting if we should try to do it ourselves with guidance from someone who knows how to replace a light that is 3 wire to 2 wire or should we just hire someone to. A light switch in my bedroom came loose when i was painting around it and i can t figure out how to wire it back correctly. There will be an additional wire needed often red to connect the switches together to a dedicated screw or input on the switch that is specifically marked for this purpose.
